Gas Leak Detection

If you can smell gas, hear a hiss near a pipe, or an appliance has started behaving oddly, it needs checking by someone Gas Safe registered. We trace the source in domestic pipework and appliances, put it right, and prove the installation is holding before anything goes back on.

What's involved

Finding a leak is a sequence of checks, and each one narrows down where the gas is escaping.

Making the Property Safe

Isolating the supply at the meter where needed, ventilating the area and confirming it is safe to work before any testing begins.

Tightness Testing

Pressure testing the installation at the meter to establish whether gas is genuinely escaping and roughly how much.

Tracing the Source

Working along joints, valves, fittings and appliance connections with a gas detector and leak-detection solution until the exact point is found.

Repair and Retest

Repairing or replacing the failed section, then retesting the installation and recommissioning each appliance before it goes back into use.

When you think you can smell gas

Natural gas has no smell of its own, so a scent is added to it, usually described as rotten eggs or sulphur. If you can smell that indoors, treat it as real until someone has checked. Open windows and doors, keep naked flames away, leave light switches and other electrical items alone, and turn the supply off at the meter if you can reach the lever safely. If the smell is strong, get everyone out of the property first and make the call from outside.

Not every leak announces itself that clearly. A slow weep at a joint can sit below the level you would ever notice by nose, and the first sign is something else entirely: a boiler that keeps dropping out, a burner flame gone lazy and yellow, sooting around an appliance, or a meter that creeps when nothing in the house is running.

A smell that comes and goes is still a smell of gas. It usually means the leak is small, not that it is imaginary.

How the leak is actually found

The first job on arrival is the property itself: whether it is safe to be in, whether the supply needs isolating at the meter, and whether the area needs ventilating before anything else happens. Only then does testing start.

We begin at the meter with a tightness test, letting the installation stand under pressure and watching whether it holds. That tells us whether gas is genuinely escaping and gives a sense of the scale, which shapes where we look next. From there it is methodical: appliances isolated one at a time to see whether the loss follows a particular one, then along the pipework itself with a gas detector and leak-detection solution on joints, valves and connections. Where pipe runs disappear under floors, behind boxing or into the ground, the route is traced rather than guessed at.

Confirming there is a leak is the easy part. Pinning down exactly where it escapes is the actual job.

More information

Signs worth getting checked

  • A smell of gas, whether constant or coming and going
  • Hissing near pipework, the meter or an appliance connection
  • Yellow or lazy burner flames where they should be crisp and blue
  • Sooting or black marks around an appliance
  • Pilot lights that keep blowing out for no obvious reason
  • A meter that moves when everything in the house is turned off
  • Dead or scorched patches of grass above a buried supply pipe

Once the source is found we repair or replace the failed section, then test again to confirm the installation is holding. Every appliance is recommissioned and checked before it goes back into use, because a fixed leak and an appliance left burning badly is only half a job done. If you are a landlord and also need a gas safety certificate, a CP12 can be issued at the same visit.

Before you book

Straight answers to what people ask us about suspected gas leaks.

What should I do if I can smell gas in my home?
Open windows and doors to ventilate, keep naked flames away, and do not use light switches or anything else electrical. Turn the supply off at the meter if you can reach the lever safely, and leave the property if the smell is strong. Then get a Gas Safe registered engineer to check it before anything is turned back on.
What are the signs of a small gas leak?
Small leaks do not always give off an obvious smell. Look out for hissing near pipework or an appliance connection, yellow or lazy burner flames, sooting around an appliance, pilot lights that keep blowing out, or a meter that moves when nothing is in use. Outdoors, a dead or scorched patch of grass above a buried supply pipe is worth having looked at.
How do you find where the gas is escaping?
We start with a tightness test at the meter to confirm the installation is losing gas and to gauge how much. Appliances are then isolated one at a time, and the pipework is worked along with a gas detector and leak-detection solution on joints, valves and fittings. Hidden or buried runs are traced rather than guessed at.
Will you have to turn my gas off?
Sometimes, yes. If there is any risk, the supply is isolated at the meter and the area ventilated before testing continues, and it may stay off until the repair is finished. It is a precaution rather than a sign that the problem is worse than expected.
Can you repair the leak once you have found it?
Yes. We repair or replace the failed section of pipework, joint or fitting, then retest the installation to confirm it is holding. Each appliance is recommissioned and checked before it goes back into use.
Do you carry out commercial gas leak detection?
No. Our Gas Safe registration, number 568345, covers domestic gas work, so this service is for homes and rental properties rather than commercial premises. Any commercial work we take on is plumbing or bathroom fit-out only.
Which areas do you cover for gas leak detection?
We are based in Woodingdean and cover Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Lewes, Shoreham-by-Sea, Haywards Heath, Seaford, Burgess Hill and surrounding Sussex towns. Our premises at 58 Warren Road, Woodingdean can be visited if you would rather speak to us in person.
How do I arrange a visit or get a price?
Call us on 01273 911551 and describe what you have noticed, including where the smell or the noise is and which appliances are involved. That tells us what to bring and what we are likely to be dealing with. If you are unsure whether it is serious, it is still worth the call.
