What a conversion can involve

Every boiler conversion is a bit different depending on the existing setup, so here's the range of work it can cover.

Oil-to-Gas Conversion

When your boiler setup needs more than a repair

Sometimes a boiler isn't just old, it's the wrong type for the house. An outdated back boiler, an oil system in a property that's since had mains gas connected, or a heating setup that's never quite matched how the household actually uses hot water, these all point to a conversion rather than a straight swap. It's more involved than fitting a like-for-like replacement, which is exactly why it needs proper assessment first.

We start by looking at the existing system as a whole: the boiler, the pipework, the flue or chimney route, and how hot water and heating are distributed around the house. That tells us what can stay and what needs to change. Depending on the job, this might mean removing an old oil tank, adjusting flue routes, upgrading pipework, or bringing in a new gas supply. Once the new boiler's in, we test and commission it properly, checking combustion and running the system through before calling it finished.

A boiler conversion done properly starts with understanding the whole system, not just the box on the wall.

We're Gas Safe registered for domestic gas work and an accredited Vaillant installer, and we handle the disposal of old equipment as part of the job so you're not left sorting it yourself.

What tends to come up

Conversions often surface a few extra bits of work once we're in, and we'd rather flag these upfront than spring them on you halfway through:

  • Copper pipework that needs replacing or resizing for the new boiler
  • Flue or chimney liner upgrades to meet current requirements
  • A new or extended gas supply line, where the property's switching fuel type
  • Removal of an old oil tank or redundant components

Vaillant boiler replacing a 1979 system

This Vaillant boiler took the place of one fitted in August 1979. We removed the existing boiler, cylinder and tanks to bring the system up to date, and fitted a smart thermostat alongside the new boiler, which carries a ten year warranty.

How do I know if I need a conversion rather than a straight boiler swap?
If you've got an old back boiler, an oil system, or a setup that no longer matches how you use hot water and heating, a conversion is usually the better route. We'll assess your existing system and tell you honestly which option fits.
How long does a boiler conversion take?
It depends on the scope, a straightforward conversion might take a day or two, while one involving new pipework, flue changes or gas supply work can take longer. We'll give you a clear timeframe once we've seen the property.
Will you remove and dispose of my old boiler or oil tank?
Yes, safe removal and disposal of old equipment is part of the job, so you don't need to arrange that separately.
Are you qualified to do this work?
Yes, we're Gas Safe registered for domestic gas work and an accredited Vaillant installer, and all conversions are properly tested and commissioned before we finish.
Do you convert oil boilers to gas?
Yes, where mains gas is available at the property we can convert from oil to gas, including removing the old tank and equipment.
Is this covered by Gas Safe registration if it's a rental property?
Our Gas Safe registration covers domestic gas work, which includes rental properties as well as owner-occupied homes. We don't carry out commercial gas work.
