Getting to the bottom of weak water pressure

Low water pressure is annoying, but it's also useful information. It's telling you something, whether that's a stuck valve, a build-up of limescale in a showerhead, or a slower leak somewhere in the system. We start by working out whether it's affecting one tap or the whole property, because that changes where we look first.

Our approach is straightforward: check the easy things before assuming the worst. Aerators and showerheads get cleaned or swapped if they're clogged. Shut-off valves and the water meter valve get checked to make sure they're fully open. If pressure is low across the whole house, we'll test the pressure-reducing valve and look for signs of leaks or corroded pipework, which is more common in older Sussex homes with original plumbing still in place.

A dribbly shower is rarely just bad luck. There's usually a reason, and it's usually fixable.

How do I know if it's one tap or the whole house?
Check a few different taps and the shower. If only one fixture is affected, it's often a local blockage or clogged aerator; if it's everywhere, it's more likely a valve, regulator, or leak issue.
Could low pressure mean I have a leak?
It can, yes. A drop in pressure alongside higher water bills or damp patches is worth getting checked promptly, as leaks tend to get worse and more costly over time.
Will I need new pipes?
Not usually. Most low pressure issues are down to valves, regulators, or clogged fixtures, but in homes with old galvanised or corroded pipework, replacement may be the only lasting fix.
How long does a typical visit take?
Diagnosis and simple fixes, like cleaning an aerator or adjusting a valve, are often done in one visit. More involved issues, such as leak repairs or regulator replacement, may need a follow-up.
