What's involved in a split system install

Every split system job covers the same core stages, whether it's one room or a whole house.

Site Survey & Sizing

We assess the room, glazing, and use to get the unit size and siting right before anything is quoted.

Indoor & Outdoor Unit Fitting

Mounting the wall-mounted indoor unit and outdoor condenser, with wall penetration and pipe routing done neatly.

Refrigerant Line Work & Testing

Copper lines flared, vacuumed and pressure-tested by suitably qualified refrigerant engineers before the system is commissioned.

Electrical Supply & Making Good

Running the electrical supply the system needs and making good any wall, render or decor disturbed by the install.

Getting one room properly cooled and heated

A split system is two units doing one job: a wall-mounted indoor unit and an outdoor condenser, joined by refrigerant pipework, a drain line and a power cable. It is the standard answer for a room that overheats, without ripping out ceilings for ductwork.

Most people come to us with one room in mind. We survey before quoting, because room size, glazing, pipe run length, access and the available electrical supply all change both the right system and the price. From there we handle the siting, the wall penetration, the pipe routes, the condensate, the electrics and the making good. The refrigerant work, flaring, vacuuming, pressure testing and leak checking, is carried out by suitably qualified refrigerant engineers who work to us, the same way a builder brings in a qualified electrician.

One number, one team, and one company responsible for how it looks as well as how it runs.

Most modern split systems are reverse-cycle, so they heat as well as cool. A unit fitted for a hot loft in July is doing useful work again by October, which is often what decides it.

Rooms we fit split systems in

Garden room air conditioning — garden offices, studios and summer houses. Unbearable in July, unusable in January, and one reverse-cycle unit deals with both. The survey checks the spur from the house can carry the load.

Loft conversion air conditioning — loft rooms catch the sun all day and hold the heat. Fitted during the build, or as a neat retrofit once the room is finished.

Conservatory air conditioning — the heat load depends on the glazing and which way the room faces, not the floor area. Sizing to the real load is what makes the room usable all year.

Home gym air conditioning — garages, spare rooms and garden buildings, sized for the heat you generate training rather than the square footage.

Bedroom air conditioning — getting the noisy part outside and siting it thoughtfully. The aim is sleeping better, not just colder.

More information

We fit single splits for one room, multi-split systems where several rooms share one outdoor unit, and small commercial premises on the same basis. We don't quote without a survey, because the things that move the price are the things you can only see on site.

We cover Brighton and Hove, Worthing, Lewes, Shoreham-by-Sea, Haywards Heath, Seaford, Burgess Hill and the surrounding Sussex towns. If you're weighing up whether a split system suits your space, get in touch and we'll talk it through before anyone climbs a ladder.

Before you book a survey

Answers to what people usually ask before fitting a split system, based on the jobs we actually do.

How much does a split system installation cost?
It depends on room size and glazing, how many rooms need covering, the pipe run length and access, and the electrical supply available, so we always survey first rather than quote blind. Get in touch and we'll arrange a survey to give you an accurate figure.
Can one system heat as well as cool?
Yes, most modern split systems are reverse-cycle, so the same unit that cools a room in summer can heat it in winter, which is worth factoring in when you're deciding whether it's worth doing.
Who actually carries out the refrigerant work?
We're the contractor on the job from start to finish, and the refrigerant work, flaring, vacuuming, pressure testing and leak checking, is carried out by suitably qualified refrigerant engineers who work to us. You deal with one company throughout.
What rooms are split systems usually fitted in?
Garden offices and garden rooms, home gyms, loft conversions, conservatories and bedrooms that overheat are the most common, along with whole-home setups using multiple indoor units.
Do you fit air conditioning in commercial premises too?
Yes, we install and maintain air conditioning in small commercial premises like offices, shops, salons and cafes, alongside our domestic work.
How long does an installation take?
A single-room installation is typically a straightforward day's work, but it depends on pipe run length, access and whether extra electrical work is needed, which we'll confirm at survey stage.
What if my system develops a refrigerant leak later on?
We carry out leak detection and repair rather than a top-up, since a properly sealed system shouldn't lose refrigerant, so a drop usually means there's a leak to find and fix.
Which areas do you cover?
We're based in Woodingdean and work across Brighton and Hove, Worthing, Lewes, Shoreham-by-Sea, Haywards Heath, Seaford, Burgess Hill and the surrounding Sussex towns.
